Tempo di Lettura: 2 minuti

Stock up on prosciutto before Christmas and you’ll always be able to serve up a treat when guests call by unannounced.

It’s a Christmas dilemma common to many people – what do you serve guests who call by unexpectedly in the run up to Christmas and the New Year?  As much as you are delighted to see them, it can sometimes leave you scratching your head as to what to serve them.

Ideally, you’ll want to have something close to hand and easy to make to save time fussing in the kitchen when you’d rather by chatting with old friends and catching up with relatives.

Chocolates and cake only go so far, and not everyone has a sweet tooth, so what do you do?

Keep a few packets of Prosciutto di San Daniele at home, or buy it freshly sliced from a local deli, over Christmas and in the run up to the New Year, and you’ll never be caught short when unexpected guests pop by.

Here are some of our favourite, easy-to-make, finger foods and party dishes for you to try over the coming weeks.

Apricot halves wrapped with Prosciutto di San Daniele.

Either fresh or tinned apricots work well with this dish, and it’s also possible to use dried apricots if that’s all you have in the cupboard.  These party treats are really simple to make – all you have to do is wrap some prosciutto around an apricot half and spear it with a cocktail stick to hold it together or, to add some extra aroma and flavour, with a sprig of fresh rosemary.

Prosciutto di San Daniele with melon.

This classic combination has stood the test of time because it’s not just simple to make, it also offers the perfect combination of salty and sweet.  Cube, ball or slice melon and add a topping of Prosciutto di San Daniele and your guests will thank you!  If you want to add a little twist to this timeless pairing, then read on…

Campari-infused melon balls with Prosciutto di San Daniele.

Looking for an easy way to provide variation to the traditional melon and prosciutto pairing?  Then try soaking melon balls in the Italian aperitif, Campari.  Place them in the fridge for an hour before removing and wrapping in Prosciutto di San Daniele and sprinkling with finely chopped mint before serving.

Star sandwiches.

This is a fun idea that children will love.  Lightly toast bread and cut it into star shapes, then fill with Prosciutto di San Daniele and cheese.  Experiment with different shapes using cookie cutters – stars, hearts and circles will all add some interest to your table!
