Tempo di Lettura: 3 minuti

Elevate your favourite winter comfort food this season with our warming recipe inspiration featuring Prosciutto di San Daniele.

There are two types of people – either you love summer or you’re a winter enthusiast.

The first group appreciate the summer months in all their glory, revelling in the opportunity to enjoy alfresco eating, impromptu picnics, the cool evening breeze against bare arms and the freedom that lighter clothing, brighter nights and lighter mealtimes brings.

Then there are those who like nothing better than to pack away the flip flops and suncream and cosy up in layers of warm woollens, seeking solace in roaring fires and months of enjoying hearty, filling comfort food.

As the days get shorter and the darkness descends ever earlier each afternoon in our town of San Daniele, these are the people who embrace the opportunity to sit by the warm glow of a fire, propped up on plump cushions and tucking in to a warming winter feast.

Hats, scarves and gloves at the ready, they enjoy a warming hot cocoa of an evening, staying snug both outdoors and in.

The problem comes when they’re faced with the same meals over and over again.  Tasty as they may be, sometimes even your favourite comfort foods need shaking up a bit, and we know exactly how to do just that.

Here are our favourite comfort food cheats – all you need is a packet of Prosciutto di San Daniele either from a supermarket or freshly sliced from your local deli.

With the simple addition of some of our tasty prosciutto, your classic comfort meal can become elevated to something that’s truly out of the ordinary.

Here’s how to add some traditional Italian flavour to your favourite warming winter dishes.

  • Mac & Cheese topped with Prosciutto di San Daniele. Mac & Cheese has become a street food staple across Europe and no wonder. The mix of cheese and carbohydrates makes it easy to eat and very filling, but have you tried it with thinly sliced prosciutto on top? It turns it from an ordinary dish to something extra-special! Add the prosciutto right at the very end, once you have plated it and then watch the prosciutto melt. A sweet and salty kick to a classic comfort food!
  • Homemade pizza. Not only does homemade pizza usually taste better than take-away or restaurant pizza, it’s a fun thing for the family to do together.  If you can’t get your family to agree on toppings, you can make a half-and-half pizza, or even create a different topping for each slice.  One thing we think the whole family will enjoy though is a light topping of Prosciutto di San Daniele.  As with our recommendation for Mac & Cheese, it’s best not to cook the pizza with the prosciutto on top, as it can easily become overcooked.  All you need to do is drape thinly sliced prosciutto on top of the pizza once it has come out of the oven and before serving.  Melt in the mouth deliciousness!
  • Burger and prosciutto. We all know about the traditional burger toppings – tomato, gherkin, lettuce, cheese, but have you ever tried it with a topping of Prosciutto di San Daniele?  We recommend making your own burger from the best ingredients possible – the current trend for gourmet burgers relies on using top-quality ingredients and fresh baps or burger buns.  Then top your burger with a slice of prosciutto, pop it into a bun and get ready to take a bite of burger heaven!
  • Creamy pasta and prosciutto.  In San Daniele del Friuli one of our favourite local dishes is tagliolini al San Daniele.  It’s very simple to make and absolutely delicious to eat – simply cut Prosciutto di San Daniele into fine strips then sauté until crispy and serve with poppy seeds in a creamy sauce in tagliolini pasta.  If you can’t find tagliolini pasta then use the pasta of your choice and whip up a creamy white sauce, adding strips of prosciutto at the last minute as a topping.
