Yet these days, a leisurely breakfast is something many of us can only aspire to, rushing, as we do, from bed to kitchen, to commuter train to office, all while often getting the children ready for school during the week too.
But come the weekend, or those deliciously long vacation days and public holidays when you have nothing to do but indulge yourself, well, those days are different matters entirely!
On these days you can treat yourself and your family to one of the leisurely breakfasts that John Gunther was so inspired by, and take on board another famous breakfast saying – breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince and dine like a pauper.

It doesn’t mean that you need to change into royal robes and a crown the minute you get out of bed! Rather, it’s suggesting that your first meal of the day should be the biggest, richest and most filling, to ‘set you up for the day’ and provide the food fuel your body needs to face the day’s challenges, leaving you less likely to have sugar cravings by mid-morning.
In the English language, the first meal of the day is called breakfast because that’s when you ‘break the fast’ your body undertook while you slept throughout the night. In Italy we call it prima colazione. Across the world, it’s also often known as the most important meal of the day, providing us with energy and important nutrients including calcium, iron, protein, fibre and vitamins – as long as you eat the right things, of course!
And that’s where Prosciutto di San Daniele comes in, along with our mouth-watering breakfast ideas (read on for inspiration!).
Our prosciutto is an excellent source of complete high-quality proteins, along with vitamins (in particular vitamins B1, B6 and B12) and minerals (especially zinc and potassium). Avocado Toast has really taken the world of food by storm over the past few years – you just need to look for the hashtag #avocadotoast on Instagram to see how popular it is – at the beginning of 2018 it had more than 600,000 posts and in 2015 it was named New York’s most popular food. Our twist on this new tradition is to layer slices of Prosciutto di San Daniele on Smashed Avocado Toasted Bread.
Another beyond-ordinary breakfast pairs Prosciutto di San Daniele with Baked Eggs – the sweet saltiness of the prosciutto adds the perfect balance to the soft creamy texture of the eggs. First, line an oven-proof ramekin with Prosciutto di San Daniele, then crack an egg into it (or two, depending on the size of your ramekin) and be careful not to split the yoke when you break them. Finally, layer your creation with some lusciously crumbly goat’s cheese. Once the eggs have been baked through and the whites are set (usually after around 15 minutes, but it depends on your oven, whether you are using a hot water bath or baking them plain and whether you prefer your yolks runny or hard) then serve this tasty treat with sautéed spinach and cherry tomatoes roasted in olive oil and fresh basil. Delizioso!
Our friend, blogger Lucy from Supergolden Bakes, created her Heart-Shaped Oven-Poached Eggs with Grana Padano Crisps and Prosicutto di San Daniele Asparagus Soldiers recipe for us for St. Valentine’s day, but it can be served for birthdays and anniversaries too, or those days when breakfast in bed is the perfect way to say ‘I love you’.
Thanks to our Chef Ambassador, Angela Hartnett, who is Chef Patron at London restaurants Café Murano and the one Michelin starred Murano, even the smallest recipe additions can have significant results, as we can see in her recipe for Fried Eggs with Prosciutto di San Daniele and White Truffle.
Angela suggests swapping regular bread for sourdough and adding a few shavings of deliciously earthy white truffle to a traditional English or American fried egg breakfast (added fresh and raw to the finished dish, the heat of the eggs will release the aroma of the truffle).
We always recommend buying the finest ingredients you can afford, so choose good quality eggs and butter and fresh white winter truffle. Even the thinnest shaving of truffle can transform a meal into an exquisite experience and, paired with our prosciutto, your taste buds will come alive to this delectably delicate and nuanced combination of flavours.
